![]() The Institute is working with the Eagle Hill Foundation in developing a retreat style study and meeting facility on the summit of Eagle Hill and in developing the Foundation's first journal, the Journal of the North Atlantic, focusing on peoples of the North Atlantic, their expansion into the region over time, and their interactions with their changing environment. The Institute has a special interest in the legacy of Alexander von Humboldt, the most renowned natural scientist of the early 19th century. It publishes the Northeastern and Southeastern Naturalists, two natural history science journals for eastern North America. The Institute actively promotes collaboration in education, research, and publishing by working together with scientists from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. ![]() The Eagle Hill Institute (formerly the Humboldt Institute) is located on the eastern Maine coast and is perhaps best known for the advanced and professional-level natural history science field seminars it has offered since 1987. Such limitations should be considered when selecting sites to establish new populations of EHS in northern regions. Habitat there is suitable but likely is not optimal. We suspect our population persists because it occurs in a large parcel of land with limited human alteration and use. Home ranges were also larger than those reported in most studies. When combined with a previous study conducted in the same area, we found that cover-type associations (mesic forest) of this population differed from known affinities (open, xeric habitats) of EHS throughout much of its geographic distribution. Compared to random locations, microhabitat features at snake activity sites included higher ground-surface temperatures, closer proximity to wetlands, less canopy closure, and more abundant shrubs, ground debris, and rock cover. Read new seed packets of crops like rice, pumpkins, and wheat to learn how to. It is in fact a sort of modpack of its own, bringing together new crops to farm, foods to find and cook, with new and advanced fishing, hunting, and foraging systems. (American Beech/oak) stands, and 6 other cover types. Snake’s pice de resistance mod, and much more than the name suggests. Within individual home ranges, snakes selected Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock) stands most often, followed by, in order of frequency, White/Red Pine stands, mixed forest, Fagus grandifolia/Quercus spp. resinosa (Eastern White/Red Pine) stands, and 7 other cover types. At the landscape scale, transmitter-equipped snakes were found most often in developed lands, followed by, in order of frequency, mixed forest, Pinus strobus/P. As an initial step toward potential restoration, we examined habitat associations of a peripheral population of EHS in New Hampshire.
